The Marketing Funnel: Website “GRAVITY”
Think of your website as a Ferrari and your goal is to sell it. You drive into a nearby Millionaire convention. Even the smallest glimpse from afar will draw people in (as we all know from experience). The goal is to get them in the driver’s seat and with the enticing interior, that shouldn’t be too hard. Once behind the wheel, you give them an opportunity to test drive and utilize what’s under the hood. I call this process “Gravity“. The process is a flow that should be a similar approach used for your website. Referencing Tim Ash (landing page expert), there are 3 keys to reaching your goals in online marketing that define what I call “Gravity”:
- Acquisition (→) : Getting people to the site
- Conversion (√) : Persuading them to take/select the desired action(s)
- Retention (←) : Bringing them back as a client
Each step feeds the other and resemble a funnel. Acquisition (SEO, Marketing, etc) without Conversion and Retention is a waste of time and money. You have to be confident in the sites ability to convert, before dropping dough on SEO and any other acquisition methods available!
You have the ability to increase the Gravity of your website. The formula of success is as follows: Gravity > Investment. There are many free tools, 3rd party apps, SAAS providers and more that can help you achieve this level of success. Otherwise, your continuing to throw away money and ignoring the overwhelming amount of tools easily at your disposal. (Digging through these tools is another story all together. Do your homework or hire First Time Online.)
Setting Goals & Smart Spending
In the sense of marketing, companies spend a lot of time and resources buying ads, running campaigns, tracking performance, SEO, Social Media, E-Mail…etc…but they almost completely ignore the website or landing page and its ability to convert visitors into paying customers. Want to see if you’re making a smart investment? Follow this formula: Investment (Hours Spent On Site X Hourly Rate) < Return On Investment (ROI). In this instance, your ROI is your GOAL. If you find that you’re investing more money on your site than what you get out of it, then you’re working for your website, when your website should be working for you!
Conclusion: Talk To Me First
I’m not trying to play professional, but in my 2+ years hand building websites and consulting, I know that a website without gravity is simply another planet among all the stars. (Like that one? Thought of it on the spot.) There’s a lot to think about in terms of the future of your website. I would 100% hold off on spending any more money online until you’re confident you’re making the right decisions. I’m in the business of saving money and maximizing ROI. I hope this little bit helped!
